What is a Balance Board?

A balance board is a device that can be used for exercise, physical therapy, balance training, muscle training, brain development, and more. It consists of a platform that can support a person and a fulcrum, which is a piece that touches the ground to add an element of instability. The board sits atop the fulcrum. The user of the balance board attempts to remain balanced so that the board does not touch the ground. The rider must engage their entire body and brain to stay balanced.

While there are hundreds of different models of balance boards, they generally fit into these main categories:

· Spring boards: Spring boards were added to the market in 2013 with the release of StrongBoard balance, which holds a patent on the multi-spring design. The board’s fulcrum consists of four individual compression springs situated between the base and the platform. Once a user stands on the board, the springs compress. The user’s body then searches for stabilization, but because of the force applied to the springs from the user’s body weight, the board will not stabilize. By redistributing weight across the board, the rider can move the board in any relative direction – engaging core stabilizing muscles.

· Rocker boards: A rocker board is a flat board with a curved or flat fulcrum attached to the underside. The user stands with one foot on each end of the board and can tilt it from side to side.

· Rocker-roller boards: A rocker-roller model is a flat board that sits on top of a cylindrical fulcrum or roller. The rider stands atop the board as the cylinder rolls beneath it.

· Wobble boards: A wobble board is a flat circular surface on top of a semi-sphere that allows the board to pivot 360 degrees. The user positions themselves on the board and tries to balance so that the edges of the board do not touch the ground. Wobble boards can also be used for squats, push-ups, sit-ups, and more.

· Sphere-and-ring boards: A rubber ball or sphere is placed underneath a board. The user can move the board in any direction by redistributing their weight.

Additional balance board types include underwater and above water models used for physical therapy or yoga.

    I LOVE StrongBoard!! It’s a great addition to my regular workout, it makes working out fun and oh my god, it’s working muscles I didn’t even know I had! Since getting my StrongBoard I have no problem getting my workout in, I can work out even when I’m not working out – when I’m watching TV or doing something else at home. Just standing on StrongBoard for 10 minutes, I can feel my core and all my muscles contracting, and I love it! I was so shaky in the beginning but my balance have gotten so much better since incorporating StrongBoard in my workouts. There are so many great exercises I can do with my balance board, and it really makes working out challenging and fun! Another thing that is great about it is that it’s so lightweight, so I can bring it with me when I travel.

    I love the board and how easy it is to use at home and incorporate into my routine, it increases the intensity and makes what could be an isolated movement (arm curls) into a full body just by balancing (or trying to) on the board. Great way to break a sweat quickly and work more of your body in a limited space like my apartment.

    I love this product! As a triathlete and fitness pro, I know that balance training can set me apart from my competitors. I noticed “new” muscles developed around my joints after a month of training on it. Normally I experience a few small set-backs each season from previous injuries… but with training on the StrongBoard balance I was able to keep consistently training and never got injured!! Simple functional exercises like squats, push-ups, plyo, and lunges are much more challenging. It definitely kicked my butt a little bit but I definitely feel stronger on a functional and performance level. It’s also lightweight, easy to use, and really fun!

    This for me is the best piece of exercise equipment anyone can own. Worth every penny, It has a small footprint and a mighty result. Hundreds of daily crunches and sit ups can’t compare with the strong core I have developed with Strongboard. The results have been amazing. In addition, in the past, balance has been an issue for me having spinal stenosis, but with the Strongboard I have become stronger every day. I have it close where I can jump on it every day even for 5 minutes. I love this piece of equipment and it is so portable. I highly recommend taking some Strongboard classes to see for yourself.
